Quick.  It’s 10:00 at night, it’s raining like mad, you’re over by the Massachusetts State House, and it’s time to grab dinner.  Where to go?

I recently found myself in this predicament.  Doing some work on Tremont, we weren’t sure where to go. We certainly could have gone over to Faneuil Hall, and were not in the mood for the crowd.  Years previously while working in Boston, we used to go over to a place Scollay Square.  A quick web check told us they were open, and off we went.

Scollay Square was the first restaurant of the Legendary Restaurant Group, owned by Brad Dalbeck and Chris Damian and opened in 2004.  Brad always worked the crowd, while Chris made the food extraordinary.  Their other properties are each unique (Tavern on the Water in Charleston is a great summer venue with great Boston views, Max and Dylans is named after their two sons and their two locations aim for hip and trendy. Papagayo! is their spin on a Mexican Restaurant and Tequila Bar.  Charlestown’s Andiamo provides homemade take-out dishes, providing a great meal without the hassle of precious time spent on their part cooking or dining at a restaurant.  Poking around their website also gives a hint at a new wine bar Sip and Avery Provision Company – occupying the same space.

Scollay Square aims for upscale comfort food (perfect at 10:00PM.)  They are located on a one way portion of Beacon Street, in the shadow of the State House, just past Fox 25 News “Beacon Hill Studios”, and before the XV Beacon (15 Beacon) hotel on the left.  Directly past the restaurant is a small parking lot convenient when off street parking is needed.

Entering the restaurant is through their outdoor patio.  Over the years the owners have opened up the space more, giving the sense of an arrival.

The menu presented a large array of options.  We went with an order of BBQ pork sliders, created with slow cooked pork and topped with cole slaw, and a Macaroni and Cheese with Maine Lobster.

Each was very tasty.  The pork sliders are finger sized, and were delectable (although the pork could have been a tad warmer.)  The mac and cheese was steaming hot, with nice bits of lobster throughout the bowl.

On a rainy, cold night….a perfect combination accompanied by a Cape Ann Brewing Company craft beer perfectly suggested by our waiter.

So…a little off the beaten path, and conveniently located by the State House, offers comfort food in an upscale casual environment.


Lunch: Monday through Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
Dinner: Nightly at 5:30 p.m.

Brunch-Sat, Sun, & Holiday Mondays: 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Serving: till 10:00 p.m. Monday-Wednesday
             till 11:00 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday
            till 9:00 p.m. Sunday

Scollay Square gets a GREEN LIGHT…go and enjoy.
